Cross-level Methodology: Hiearchical Linear Modeling

Recent articles and extant evidence suggests that management researchers are often reluctant to conduct cross-level research. However, cross-level research is crucial as it has the ability to enhance understanding of organizational phenomena. This research presentation will define cross-level research and discuss the three main types of such research. The challenges facing researchers using cross-level design will be noted. The presentation will also discuss some of the major problematic issues when traditional regression is used to test cross-level relationships. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) will then be presented as one technique to address such problems and to conduct cross-level tests. Attendees will also have the opportunity to observe how HLM tests are conducted. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the benefits of HLM.
