Workshop on Organization Theory and Strategy

This workshop is designed to introduce students to fundamental questions and approaches pertaining to the study of organizations. The purpose of the course is to provide students with an initial grounding in the social science literature on organizations. My goal is to familiarize you with the major theoretical (and empirical) traditions in organization theory.

The workshop will enable you to understand the intellectual development of organization theory and its various shifts in emphasis: from workers to managers, from organizational processes to outputs, from studies of a single organization and its environment to studies of populations of organizations. While we discuss organization theory, we have a strong emphasis on how organization theory relates to strategy.

This workshop should also help you to gain a better understanding of your own research topic and learn how to apply these readings to your topic. Hopefully, the readings will alter what you think about your own topic. You should not understand these theories as being an accessory for your research, but as an outfit.

All students should arrive at class with questions, topics, and issues to be vetted and debated. Class participation involves both your performance as a session leader and your active, thoughtful participation. A good seminar should have active dialog and debate. If someone proposes an idea that is contrary to your view, speak up. I will often be intentionally provocative, so be prepared to push back. Your task is to engage one another.
