Title: Professional development and digitalisation of working life

Abstract

This lecture presents recent research conducted in the Professional Growth and Learning research group in Tampere University, Finland. First part of the lecture explores how the professional and non-professional use of social media is related to subjective career success and career engagement of higher education staff members (Wallin & Nokelainen, 2019). Second part is related to government workers’ views on supporting and hindering factors to professional development and agency in the context of digitalized working life (Wallin, Pylväs, & Nokelainen, 2019). Third part will discuss design and methodological issues related to investigation of relationships between career success, workplace as learning environment, basic psychological needs, person-vocation/group fit, job satisfaction and turnover intention (ongoing quantitative study amongst highly skilled technology sector workers). Lecture will end with a discussion about the design of an ongoing study that utilises educational data mining of the engineering higher education student register data to predict study delays and dropouts.
