Title: Meta-Analysis: Why and How

Abstract:
As many fields mature and significant knowledge is generated, approaches to evaluate the state of the field become important. This presentation will first briefly discuss the types of integrative approaches to synthesize literatures across fields. While narrative reviews of literatures provide important summaries of literatures, the presentation will focus on meta-analyses. Beyond narrative reviews, a meta-analysis “adds value in providing a quantitative assessment of the relationship between two target variables or the effectiveness of an intervention” (Hansen, Steinmetz, & Block, 2022: 1). The presentation will discuss why meta-analyses are critical and will expand on important steps to conduct an appropriate meta-analysis. The presentation will also present a brief practical application of the technique using information from the Parboteeah, Weiss & Hoegl (2023) article with an emphasis on some of the challenges in conducting meta-analyses. The presentation will conclude with some suggestions for future potential meta-analyses.
